Phoenix Mining takes environmental, social and governance (“ESG”) responsibilities seriously. ESG considerations are an integral part at every stage of our business, from exploration, mining, processing operations to logistics, procuring, trading and other administration functions throughout the Group. These ESG considerations also include the communities where we operate and through our involvement in the local communities. We have a dedicated ESG personnel overseeing health, safety, environment and community. Under a standardised approach, the dedicated personnel leads the ESG effort of identifying, assessing and managing ESG risks and opportunities.
Sustainability is a core part of who we are and what we do. It is about managing our risks, reducing our adverse environmental, social, economic and cultural impacts, and supporting and sustaining the communities and environments in which we operate. At Phoenix Mining, we integrate sustainability throughout our operations by clearly defined objectives, goals and measure or evaluate the execution of these objectives by key results or key performance indicators. We focus our ESG efforts on the following pillars: health & safety, environment and community.
Phoenix Mining has installed the electricity network for people around mining operation sites, bringing light, convenient and smile to the community. And we have created a lot of job opportunities all over the world to improve quality of life for the people in where our mining operation sites located.
We have donated goods to people suffered from natural disaster in the country with our existence in Bolivia. Under Covid-19 pandemic situation, we have also expressed our caring to the society and community by donating protective items to fight the virus along with people in these countries.
In Amayapampa, the previous mine owner left operation without paying their workers, created a difficult situation to the local community. Phoenix mining learnt about the situation from the local government and decided to sign a series of agreement not limited to the Mining Corporation of Bolivia but also the communities in the mining district including the Trade Union Board, workers and housewives. Phoenix Mining agree to provide 400 job opportunities to the local community in the future for the mining operations, and even take care of such social debt in addition to the initiation of basic salary and salary scale.
During the construction of the mining operation site, the excavation process will destroy the plantation of the area which may lead to soil erosion and habitat destruction in the area. The environment will be hard to get recovered solely by natural force, and Phoenix Mining has carried out effective engineering measure to prevent and rescue from such situation.
Unlike the usually adopted measure by pouring concrete on the slope which forbids the plants to grow, Phoenix Mining create robust and eco-friendly vegetation covers for slopes created during the excavation process, preventing soil erosion and landslip. The green slope will also purify the air, beautify the environment and provide new green habitat to support the native species, help preserving biodiversity and species abundance in the area.
